How do we make clouds, waves, weather, and planetary climate with computers? Weather and climate models have hundreds of components that each represent some part of the Earth system — from sunlight to waves to the way that leaves collect falling rainwater. In this lecture, we’ll explore the origins of these components, how their collective interplay gives rise to the richness and complexity of weather and climate in modern models, and how AI could transform both simulation and our understanding of the Earth system.
