Infant mortality is a useful statistic to determine the overall health and environmental conditions of a nation, because the youngest members of a population are the ones most easily affected by harsh conditions.
In situations where a nation’s infant mortality rate is high, people who expect that their children will not survive to adulthood tend to have more children than those who expect their children to live long lives. Thus, regions with high infant mortality tend to also be regions of high birth rates.
Another statistic that correlates well with infant mortality is a nations level of women’s education. The more well-educated the female population, the lower the infant mortality (birth rate, etc.). This relationship is more than likely due to the many health education efforts being pursued around the world.
