Population doubling time is another way to measure the speed at which a population is growing. Rather than counting the number of people added to a given population in a specified block of time, this variable measures the amount time it takes for the current population to double in size. The longer it takes a population to double, the slower the population is growing, and vise versa. The global population doubled between 1960 and 1999 (3 billion to 6 billion people), giving us a global population doubling time of 39 years for that period.
